Sinuses are small, air-filled cavities situated at the back of your cheekbones and forehead. These cavities produce mucus that moisturises the nasal passages. Sinus linings may be inflamed when the passages become blocked, resulting in an infection called sinusitis. When this happens, sinusitis surgery may be an option depending on the severity of the condition. People who suffer recurrent sinus infections, abnormal sinus structure, or abnormal growths in the sinus may be required to undergo surgery, which involves a procedure that opens the pathways of the sinuses and clear blockages. To ensure a quicker, more seamless recovery process after going through the surgery performed by ENT surgeons, here are some post sinusitis tips to follow:

1. Avoid strenuous activities
After sinusitis surgery, avoid strenuous activities like jogging, aerobic exercise or weight lifting for about one week. Walking and other moderate activities can still be performed. This is to reduce the likelihood of bleeding in your nose. After 2 to 3 weeks, you may ease back into these vigorous physical activities.
2. Avoid smoking
Smoking should be avoided at least one month after a sinusitis surgery, as it will negatively affect the healing process. Cigarettes contain nicotine that acts as a vasoconstrictor. In other words, the blood supply to your nose will decrease, reducing healing. On top of that, smoking will drastically increase the likelihood of infection, scarring, and crusting, which may result in another surgery. Keep in mind that the healing process is mainly impacted by nicotine and the harmful bi-products of the smoke. Looking for more professional advice? 3.Avoid nose blowing
Sniffing through your nose after a sinusitis surgery may not cause any negative effects but it is still strongly recommended to not blow your nose for two weeks after the operation. The interior of your nose will be swollen for four to seven days and blowing your nose too early in the healing process can cause a nosebleed. It is advisable to only blow your nose lightly three days after surgery.
4. Avoid taking aspirins unless advised by the doctor
Consuming aspirins should be avoided after you undergo a sinusitis surgery, unless you have sought your doctor’s advice. You may continue with low-dose aspirin based on your medical condition, should you be approved by your doctor to do so. Taking aspirin thins your blood and increases the length of time it takes for the blood clot process.
5. Be aware of a nosebleed
There might be cases when you experience a nosebleed after sinusitis surgery. If unfortunately, this happens, remember to pinch your nostrils together and avoid squeezing your nasal bones. Put your head forward and spit out blood in your throat, if any. Swallowing blood can cause nausea as blood irritates the lining of the stomach. To better rectify the problem, put an ice-pack over your forehead and your nose bridge. Sucking an ice-cube helps as well.
We hope the post surgery care tips above ease your healing process. You should be able to return to your routine activities once your sinuses fully recover. Always go to your ENT doctor if you need clarification on any medical condition.
